The admin side of private practice: how I use AI without crossing ethical lines
Psychologist in private practice. I want to be upfront about the limits of what AI can appropriately do in clinical work, because I think some people are using it in ways they shouldn't. AI should not be involved in clinical formulation, treatment decisions, or anything touching on client content. Full stop. What it absolutely can help with: the business administration side of running a private practice. Rebooking and reminder messages to clients. I use templates now that are warm and clear. Used to write each one individually. Referral letters to GPs and specialists. Structure and language help from AI, all clinical content from me. Insurance claim documents. So much jargon. AI helps me understand what's being asked and how to respond. Practice policies and client information documents. Terms, consent forms, cancellation policies โ all rewritten in plain language with AI assistance. My admin time has reduced significantly. That time goes to clients. That's the ethical use case: using AI to handle the administrative burden so the clinical work gets more of you.
